CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — A woman and her young child were thrust into a frightening situation over the weekend when they were carjacked by a robbery suspect in Cranston.
According to police, a suspect walked in to Shear Dimensions Hair Salon on Reservoir Avenue around 9 a.m. Sunday, and pretended to be a customer.
“At some point he grabbed one of the female employees from behind, she felt something against her stomach, she’s not sure if it was a weapon not,” said Colonel Michael Winquist of the Cranston Police Department.
Winquist said the suspect ordered the employees to hand over their belongings. They emptied their purses and handed over jewelry, including a wedding ring.
After being inside for a few minutes, Cranston police said the suspect fled the salon. As officers responded to the scene, police received word that a man with the same description carjacked a vehicle parked on Knollwood Avenue with a woman and her one year old child inside.
“The husband of the woman that was carjacked actually was coming out of the residence and observed this activity taking place. He chased the vehicle and called it into our dispatch,” Winquist said.
Police soon found the vehicle stopped on Reservoir Avenue, and the victim said the suspect exited the car and got into a dark-colored, four-door, older model BMW. That vehicle was last seen traveling north on Reservoir Avenue, police said.
The woman and child were not harmed in the incident.
The suspect is described as a black male in his mid- to late-30s, standing approximately 6 feet tall, weighing 250 to 270 pounds, unshaven, with a medium complexion, hair braided in corn rows, and blotchy pigmentation around his mouth and fingers. At the time of the crime, police said he was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt.
Anyone with information about the suspect or the incident is asked to contact Cranston Police Detective Robert Lindsay at (401) 477-5142.
