PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Police have made an arrest in the killing of a Cranston woman in Providence last week.

Derell Johnson, age 21, of Providence, faced a judge Monday morning and was held on one count of murder, according to court officials.

He’s accused of shooting 21-year-old Briana Giorgio, who police said was found last Wednesday suffering from a gunshot wound in the area of Webster and Sterling Avenues. She later died at Rhode Island Hospital.

Police believe the violence stemmed from a drug deal gone bad. Providence Police Major David Lapatin said Monday it appeared as though Giorgio was the seller, and that there was a considerable amount of marijuana involved.

“Nothing is really going to make us feel good about any of this but it is good to have an arrest,” Lapatin said.

Lapatin said it’s not likely that any more arrests will be made in the case.

Johnson was arraigned and held without bail. He also faced a judge in superior court on a previous parole violation.

He is due back in court June 15 for a pretrial conference.
