PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The state’s first gentleman has honored former first ladies for their contributions to Rhode Island.
Andy Moffit met with Suzanne Carcieri, Marilyn Almond, Marjorie Sundlun, Margherite Garrahy and Dorothy Licht on Tuesday.
The women shared their experiences in the role, then Moffit presented each with a citation.
The governor’s office says the most recent first lady, Stephanie Chafee, was invited but couldn’t attend. Chafee is married to former Gov. Lincoln Chafee, Gov. Gina Raimondo’s predecessor.
Suzanne Carcieri was Stephanie Chafee’s predecessor, serving as first lady from 2003 to 2011.
Among the group, Licht served first. She was the state’s first lady from 1969 to 1973.
Moffit says that combined, the women have 32 years of experience in the role and they all made a significant mark on Rhode Island.
