PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Hockey East announced on Monday, April 13 that junior forward Brandon Tanev and junior goalie Jon Gillies earned Warrior Hockey Player of the Week and Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for their performance in Providence’s National Championship win.
Tanev earned the honor after scoring the eventual game-winning goal at 13:43 of the third period, to lead the program to its first National Championship on Saturday, April 11.
Gillies, who was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Frozen Four, made a total of 74 saves, including a career-high 49 saves in the championship game. His 49 saves marked the second highest total in a title game and most stops in a regulation final.
Sophomore Anthony Florentino (West Roxbury, Mass.) and junior Mark Jankowski (Dundas, Ontario) were named to the Hockey East Top Performers list. Florentino recorded two points (1g, 1a) at the Frozen Four and scored the first goal in the championship game. He also was named to the Frozen Four All-Tournament Team. Jankowski also earned All-Tournament team honors after tallying two goals and an assist in the Frozen Four. The junior netted the game-winning goal against Omaha in the Friars’ semifinal win.
The Providence College Athletics Department will be hosting a National Championship celebration for the men’s ice hockey team on Tuesday, April 14 at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. The event is free of charge and open to the media and general public. Doors open at 3:00 p.m. and the event is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
