Former youth coach charged with soliciting minors for sex

CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — A former youth hockey coach in Cranston is charged with soliciting minors for sex online and possessing child pornography, according to Rhode Island State Police.

Members of the Internet Crimes Against Children task force executed an arrest warrant for Michael Defelice on Friday.

Defelice, 50, of Church Street, coached roller hockey and deck hockey at the Cranston Street Hockey Rink on Dyer Avenue from 1990 to 2003. Police said he’s currently the manager of the facility’s deck hockey rink and he referees adult street hockey at Teamworks in Warwick.

State police have made contact with both facilities, and the supervisors said they were not aware of any inappropriate conduct between Defelice and any children.

Police say he did not have a criminal record until these charges surfaced.

Defelice was arraigned Friday on charges of indecent solicitation of a minor and possession of child pornography.

His bail was set at $20,000 with surety — the judge said he needs to post $2,000 in order to go home.
