SWANSEA, Mass. (WPRI) — Massachusetts State Police said the lone survivor of a fiery wreck on the side of I-195 in Swansea late Thursday night was pulled to safety by a passing motorist who had stopped.
The driver, 22-year-old Katrina Gomes, and her passenger, 19-year-old Joseph Vodden, both of Taunton, were trapped in the car and pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
Investigators said the Chevrolet Cobalt for some reason veered off the interstate, crashed into a tree and caught fire near Exit 2 just after 11 p.m.
Police said a second passenger, 20-year-old Nicholas Hopper, was able to get out of the vehicle with the help of a passing motorist.
While on scene, Eyewitness News crews saw firefighters searching the woods with flashlights. It is unclear exactly what they were looking for.
Hopper was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries.
The crash remains under investigation.
