Students, teachers back school repairs bill

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Students and teachers in Providence were on-hand Wednesday to talk about a bill that could potentially improve their schools.

Members of the Providence Student Union discussed a bill by Rep. Aaron Regunberg that would create a $70 million trust — to continually create funding for school repairs.

On Wednesday, students and teachers called for a better environment to learn.

“No one will want to come to school if the buildings continue to deteriorate,” one student said.

“So, let’s lift the moratorium on school building construction expenditures and bring our 19th century schools into the 21st century,” a teacher added.

The legislation was introduced in February and was referred to the House Financial Committee.
