FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — Police in Fall River are looking for a pair of suspects after two girls are nearly abducted at knifepoint.
Police believe the man pulled a knife on a 9-year-old and an 18-year-old girl as he tried to lure them into his van on two separate occasions Friday.
Both girls were physically unharmed but left shaken up by the attack.
Eyewitness News spoke exclusively with one of the victims on Sunday.
The first attempt happened in broad daylight on Peckham Street, outside the 9-year-old girl’s house.
She said she was playing hide-and-go-seek in her yard with two friends, when a man whistled at her.
“He looked like he was in his 20s’,” she said.
The girl said he then walked up and asked if she and her friend wanted to get inside his van for some candy, a ride to the park and hug and kiss.
The third grader said no and the man left. But she said a short time later he returned, this time holding a knife. He then signaled to a dark van that pulled up nearby as the back door slid open.
“And the guy in the car, he was older but he looked scary because he had a ski mask on,” she told Eyewitness News.
The girl said she then ducked down by the fence and screamed. A neighbor yelled at the van and the driver took off. Although, before leaving he threw a knife at the little girl.
“He threw the knife at her [and] slit her in the arm,” said the girl’s father, Paul Lopes.
“Yeah, it hit me hard,” the girl said.
Her father said the whole ordeal was been extremely disturbing.
“This is a parent’s nightmare, you know someone coming to take your kid and basically turning your life upside down and knowing that that could have happened, your heart is in your throat,” Lopes said.
This is not the only near abduction case that happened on Friday night. Fall River Police say a similar situation happened around the corner outside of a convenience store.
Police released a surveillance photo of the suspect seen wearing a hoodie, after an 18-year-old girl called them on Friday. She alleged that the man in the photo held a knife to her throat and walked with her for several blocks while a dark van slowly trailed behind them.
Police said that like the 9-year-old girl she was able to narrowly escape. Loved ones now want the suspects to be caught.
“I just want him found,” said the girl’s aunt.
“I want them found because I’m scared of them coming back again,” said the 9-year-old girl.
