MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WPRI) – Hundreds of police officers from around the region marched in the annual Aquidneck Island Police Parade Sunday.
The parade honors those law enforcement officers who are killed or injured in the line of duty each year. Parade organizers said that last year alone, 127 officers died.
Part of the parade also marked the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Fraternal Order of Police, the country’s largest law enforcement organization with some 325,000 members nationwide.
The marchers, joined by some local military personnel, started shortly before noon on West Main Road in Middletown and traveled to Newport City Hall, about 1.5 miles away.
