PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – A man was shot and several vehicles were damaged early Sunday morning in Providence.
According to police, several officers responded to the intersection of Broad and Aldrich Streets a few minutes after 2 a.m. because they heard shots fired in the area. The officers stopped a silver car which was leaving the area at high speed and detained the occupants, but it’s not clear if they were connected to the shooting or being charged.
Meanwhile, another officer reported that a victim, later identified as 27 year-old Jesus Garo of Providence, had been taken from the scene to Rhode Island Hospital in a private vehicle. Garo had been shot but police did not have any further information on his condition later Sunday afternoon.
Witnesses told police that they thought a black Jeep SUV was involved in the shooting; police broadcast a description of the vehicle but did not locate it. Two other people told officers that their vehicles had been struck by bullets as well, but nobody else reported being hurt.
Officers found Garo’s car, running and unattended, at the intersection. They reported finding what they believed to be crack cocaine in a compartment on the passenger side door.
As of Sunday afternoon, no arrests had been made.
Police also checked a report of shots fired around 4 a.m. on Bridgham Street; officers found several shell casings in the street but nobody was hit.
