MANSFIELD, Mass. (WPRI) – Mansfield police and the U.S. Secret Service arrested a man Friday after he made threats against President Barack Obama.
Mansfield police said that they and Secret Service agents went to the West Village Apartments at 792 West Street to speak with a man who had made threats to kill the President. The man refused to come out of his apartment and refused to cooperate with the officers and agents.
Police summoned a SWAT team and negotiator and the man eventually came out of his apartment on his own and surrendered.
Officers saw some items in the apartment which “were cause for concern,” according to a Mansfield police news release, and so a state hazardous materials team checked out the apartment. Nothing that presented a public safety hazard was found.
The man was taken to the hospital for evaluation. Police have not yet released his name but said that criminal charges are pending.
It’s not clear if the man actually had the means to harm the President and police did not release any specifics about the threat that was made.
