FAIRHAVEN, Mass. (WPRI) — When police rolled up to Fairhaven Road late Monday night, after receiving reports of an accident, they found a mangled car and inside the lifeless bodies of two young people.

Police said a 2002 Saturn, driven by Brooklyn Cody Rodrigues, 21, was traveling west on Route 6 shortly before 10:30 p.m., when it appears the driver lost control of the vehicle, striking a curb.

Police said the car then rolled over and landed in the front yard of a nearby home.

Both Rodrigues and passenger, Meghan Sargent, 18, of Fairhaven, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Fairhaven school officials confirm Sargent was a senior at Fairhaven High School, where she was preparing to graduate Sunday.

“When the unthinkable happens it sets you back,” said Robert Baldwin, Superintendent of Fairhaven Public Schools.

The school department said Sargent was an honor student and drum major in the school’s band — she marched in Monday’s Memorial Day parade.

Eyewitness News learned Rodrigues also attended Fairhaven High School.

“As you can imagine — difficult day for a school, difficult day especially this time of year,” said Tara Kohler, principal at Fairhaven High.

“It’s a caring culture and that’s why immediately we’re moving on with graduation, as hard as we deal with this grief, this culture will be there for each other,” Baldwin said.

The school department told students Tuesday about the crash — and counselors have been provided.

Chief Mary R. Lyons said the Massachusetts State Police Accident Reconstruction Team and the Mattapoisett Fire Department assisted officers at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.
