CUMBERLAND, R.I. (WPRI) — A black bear has been spotted in Rhode Island.
It was a typical Memorial Day weekend in Cumberland — until a bear suddenly made an appearance in a small neighborhood off Diamond Hill Road.
“Never seen a bear in Cumberland before, let alone this neighborhood,” said Mike Picard.
On Sunday evening, Picard said he received an email from a neighbor stating he had just seem a bear in his yard.
“So I said, just for the heck of it, ‘lets see if we caught it on video,’ and sure enough we got a glimpse of it. A pretty good size bear,” he said.
Picard told Eyewitness News that he has security cameras throughout Tipping Rock Estates — a small gated community in Cumberland. He said that only one of his cameras caught the bear, but that it got a good view.
“It cam down and then down this driveway,” Picard explained. “And when it crossed, it crossed in our driveway and down into the woods out front.”
Other Cumberland residents said they saw the bear, but said it did not cause any problems.
The Department of Environmental Management called, and met with residents.
“They said they’re looking for nuts and berries and things like that, but if you don’t bother it, they won’t bother you,” Picard said.
Picard said he now makes a point to look around when he goes outside — just as a precaution.
“You never know what you’re going to see,” he said.
Experts say that in the event anyone ever comes across a bear, if they make a lot of noise and bang things together — the bear should just walk away.
