Mystic Aquarium releases rehabbed harp seal back into wild

CHARLESTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — A seal has been released back into the sea after a month of rehabilitation, Mystic Aquarium announced on Thursday.

Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Team released Nutmeg, a male harp seal, Tuesday at Blue Shutter Beach in Charlestown.

Nutmeg is determined to be one or two years old and was in the care of Mystic’s Animal Rescue Clinic for just one month before his release.

According to the aquarium, when he was found in Groton, Conn., he was dehydrated and needed treatment for pneumonia.

Nutmeg was rescued on April 13 with the assistance of the Groton Long Point Police Department.

When rescued, Nutmeg weighed only 68 pounds, and when he was released he weighed more than 75 pounds.
