Police continue to investigate after violent stretch in Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The city of Providence is reeling after two men were killed in three days and a third is recovering from a gunshot wound to the back.

A memorial is growing for Luis Padilla as police continue to investigate his death.

“It hit me that it’s true, he’s not here anymore,” said Padilla’s cousin, Katrina Castillo. “My whole family is hurting a lot because of this happening.”

An officer on routine patrol discovered Padilla’s body Monday morning in a parking lot on Plainfield Street. Police have not said how the 25-year-old father of two died.

“That may be important once we get witnesses or surveillance video,” said Providence Police Chief Col. Hugh Clements. “We certainly wouldn’t want to say the mode of death at this point.”

Police haven’t said whether they have any suspects in that case. They did however track down an accused killer in another homicide from over the weekend.

Araya Brinkley, 52, was ordered held without bail Tuesday after he was arraigned on one count of murder.

Brinkley is accused of stabbing 41-year-old Troy Henderson to death early Saturday morning near the corner of Dorrance and Fulton Streets. An eyewitness helped officers track down Brinkley nearby, and police said they found a bloody knife on him during the arrest.

Police have not commented on possible motives in either homicide case.

Another man is recovering at Rhode Island Hospital after he was shot in the back near Glenbridge and Manton Avenues late Monday night. Police are still investigating that incident, as well as another in which a man crashed his car near Elmwood Avenue and Sawyer Street at about 2 a.m. Tuesday. Witnesses said they heard gunshots shortly before the crash, but it remains unclear if he was shot at.

Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza and other city leaders held a news conference Tuesday to announce the return of the midnight basketball league, which they hope will provide young residents with a positive alternative to hanging out on street corners.
