MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — The town council in Middletown will hold a public hearing Monday night on a proposed smoking ban.
The town is considering banning smoking at its public beaches, parks and other recreational areas.
The proposal would also extend to electronic cigarettes.
“I think as a whole, the whole team agreed that it was the right decision to move in the right direction of having an ordinance to eliminate smoking at parks, beaches and recreation parks,” said Dave McLaughlin, Executive Director of Clean Ocean Access. “It’s not only a harm to public health, but it is a harm to the ocean.”
Officials said in addition to improving public health, the ban would also cut down on pollution.
