Motorists abandon vehicles after becoming trapped during flash flooding

CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Sunday’s wet weather caused problems for many after it led to flash flooding in several areas.

Flood prone areas of Cranston and Warwick were affected with several drivers being forced to abandon their vehicles after they became trapped.

Eyewitness News cameras captured two stranded vehicles under the Oaklawn underpass on Wilbur Avenue in Cranston. Fire crews were called to rescue a driver, while area homeowners dealt with flood problems, too.

“I just moved in two weeks ago and realized that I’m in a flood zone and so surprise so hey, welcome to home ownership,” Laura Halvorson said.

Several vehicles were towed form the area and officials were able to open up the street after a few hours.
