PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Providence man is accused of transporting a 14-year-old girl to New Jersey for the purpose of selling her for sexual activity.
A federal grand jury handed down an indictment charging Paul Monteiro, aka “Peezy,” on three separate sex trafficking counts, according to the office of U.S. Attorney Peter Neronha.
Monteiro, 29, and the girl were found by police, the FBI, and Homeland Security in a hotel in Franklin Township back on April 6. Monteiro was arrested, and the girl was returned to Rhode Island. Neronha’s office said she was reported missing from a group home last November.
Investigators allege that Monteiro also enticed the teen to engage in sexual conduct on camera.
Monteiro appeared in federal court in Rhode Island on May 29, and he was ordered to be held in federal custody.
Monteiro is charged with one count each of sex trafficking of a minor to engage in commercial sexual activity, interstate transportation of a minor with the intent of the minor participating in unlawful sexual activity, and sexual exploitation of a child.
