Bacteria closes 2 Middletown beaches to swimming

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island health officials have closed beaches in Middletown to swimmers because of high bacteria counts in the water, while another beach in Warwick has been reopened.

The state Department of Health on Thursday recommended the closure to swimming of Peabody’s Beach and Third Beach, both in Middletown.

The department reopened Goddard Memorial State Park Beach in Warwick, which was closed Tuesday. Health officials say the recommendation is based on results from water samples showing safe bacteria levels.

Atlantic Beach Club Beach in Middletown and Warren Town Beach in Warren were also closed Tuesday.

Health officials say they will monitor the water quality and reopen the beaches once bacteria levels are safe.

The state regularly monitors water quality at beaches throughout the summer months to ensure safe conditions for swimmers.
