Johnston crash sends 5 to hospital

JOHNSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Five people were taken to the hospital following an early morning crash on Shun Pike, Johnston police said.

At approximately 4:45 a.m. Thursday, a car containing five people swerved to avoid another car traveling the wrong direction in their lane, Deputy Police Chief Dan Parillo said.

According to Parillo, when the driver swerved to avoid the oncoming vehicle, he hit a tree and a pole.

Police said the wrong-way driver continued on, driving away from the scene.

All five occupants of the vehicle were transported for minor neck and back injuries, police said.

National Grid and Verizon crews responded to the scene to repair the damaged utility pole.
