PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Providence man is wanted by police in connection with a domestic incident in which a woman and three children were hit with hot cooking oil.
According to a police report obtained by Eyewitness News, officers responded to Branch Avenue following a 911 hangup at about 9 p.m. Wednesday.
The woman told police she was fighting with her boyfriend, Edward Lassiter, after he started going through her cell phone. The report states he then hit the woman and swiped food off the stove, causing a pan of hot cooking oil to spill all over her. Three of the four children that were in the home were also struck by hot oil.
“I just hear it from the news this morning. I feel so sorry for the kids and the mother,” said Abi Bamba, a local shopkeeper. “I think the person who did this is supposed to be punished for what he did.”
The woman was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, while the children were taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital. Their conditions are not known at this time.
Lassiter, 30, fled the scene before police arrived. He’s now being sought on domestic assault charges.
According to a police report, Lassiter was playing basketball with the kids and then came back into the victim’s apartment. The argument reportedly escalated when he started going through the woman’s phone.
The incident remains under investigation.
