BRISTOL, R.I. (WPRI) — The body of a Bristol police officer has been recovered off the coast of Costa Rica, according to a local news source.
The Tico Times reports that Officer Richard Jean-Georges was found dead off the coast of Jaco Tuesday afternoon, citing information from the Red Cross.
According to Chief Josue D. Canario, Officer Richard Jean-Georges was swimming in the Pacific Saturday when he was swept away by a rip current. Jean-Georges – a three-year veteran of the department – was vacationing with his family in the Central American country, the chief said in a statement.
According to the Times, the National Air Vigilance Service, the Coast Guard and the Red Cross launched a rescue operation by air, sea and land. The newspaper said one man was rescued, but Jean-Georges remained missing.
A group of Bristol officers traveled to Costa Rica to assist in the search.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family with expenses.
