PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Head coach Brendan Whittet of the Brown men’s ice hockey program has released the team’s schedule for the upcoming 2015-16 season.
Brown’s 29-game schedule features 13 home games, a full ECAC slate and seven non-conference tilts. Included in the schedule will be eight contests against teams that participated in last year’s NCAA Tournament, as well as two against each of the last three national champions in Providence (2015), Union (2014) and Yale (2013).
In November, Brown will travel to Northern Ireland to participate in the inaugural “Friendship Four,” an international tournament in Belfast. The Bears will also participate in the UVM Catamount Cup and will play a home-and-home series against crosstown rival and defending national champion Providence College for the 30th annual Mayor’s Cup.
“It is a great schedule with three regular season tournament championships on the line – The Friendship Four (Colgate, Lowell, Northeastern), The University of Vermont Tournament (Colgate, Lake State, Vermont) and The Mayor’s Cup (Providence College),” said Whittet. “The schedule is also extremely challenging with eight games total against NCAA Tournament teams including home-away matchups with Harvard, Yale, Quinnipiac and Providence College the 2015 NCAA champions.”
After opening the season at home against Holy Cross on Oct. 31, the Bears will kick off ECAC play with a four-game road swing, visiting Dartmouth and Harvard (Nov. 6-7) and Union and RPI (Nov. 13-14). The Bears then return home for a pair of games against Colgate and Cornell (Nov. 20-21) at Meehan Auditorium.
From there, Brown will head to Belfast for a pair of games at the “Friendship Four” Tournament, held at the Belfast Giants/Odyssey Arena. Brown will play an ECAC game against Colgate as well a non-league game against either UMass Lowell or Northeastern.
Brown will open the month of December back at College Hill for a league weekend against Quinnipiac and Princeton (Dec. 5-6) before visiting Providence on Thursday, Dec. 10 for the first of two games against the Friars. After a short break, the Bears head up to Burlington for the UVM Catamount Cup, which includes Vermont, Colgate and Lake State.
The Bears then return home to open up the 2016 calendar year on Sunday, Jan. 3 when they host Providence to wrap up the 30th annual Mayor’s Cup series. Brown claimed the two-game Mayor’s Cup series by goal differential last season by virtue of a 5-3 victory at Schneider Arena.
After a weekend off, Brown resumes ECAC play with a home-and-home against Yale, first travelling to New Haven (Jan. 15) before hosting the Bulldogs on Saturday (Jan. 16). Following a trip to the North Country against St. Lawrence and Clarkson (Jan. 22-23), the Bears close out the month at home when they host RPI and Union (Jan. 29-30).
Brown wraps up its non-conference schedule on Tuesday, Feb. 2 at UConn, before playing host to Harvard and Dartmouth (Jan. 5-6) that weekend. After visiting Cornell on Friday, Feb. 12, the Bears welcome Clarkson and St. Lawrence to Meehan for the final home weekend (Feb. 19-20) and then visit Quinnipiac and Princeton (Feb. 26-27) in the regular season finale.
ECAC Hockey playoffs begin the following weekend with the First Round scheduled for March 4-6. Quarterfinals will be played March 11-13 and the ECAC Championships in Lake Placid, New York, is scheduled for March 18-19.
