Crews free 2 women from Charlestown crash wreckage

CHARLESTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — A Hopkinton woman is expected to face charges following a two-car crash on Route 2 in Charlestown late Tuesday morning.

According to police, a vehicle driven by Katherine G. James, 19, of Hopkinton was traveling north in the area of South County Trail and Clarkin Pond Road when it crossed over the double yellow line and struck a vehicle in the southbound lane.

When police arrived on scene around 11:40 a.m., they found both James and the other driver – Susan M. Gordon, 59, of Charlestown – both trapped in their respective vehicles.

Extrication teams from both Charlestown Rescue and Charlestown Fire District used hydraulic rescue tools to free the women, who police said were both taken to South County Hospital.

Officials said Gordon was transferred to Rhode Island Hospital’s trauma center with a fracture to her cervical spine. Her condition has not been disclosed.

James was treated at South County Hospital and released.

Police said traffic on Route 2 was shut down for 40 minutes while rescue crews tended to the drivers and the reconstruction team conducted its investigation.

James will be cited for multiple traffic violations and will be required to appear before the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal at a later date, police said.
