NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — Police have made an arrest in Thursday’s late-night murder, according to the Bristol County District Attorney’s office.

18-year-old Syrelle Grace of Taunton was arrested in connection with the homicide of a 19-year-old man who was shot and killed in New Bedford.

Grace will be arraigned on murder charges Monday morning in New Bedford District Court.

Police arrived at Harrington Park at about 11:30 p.m. to find the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Rescue crews responded, but the man was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival, according to police.

The victim was identified by the district attorney as Marcelo Jean Francois.

“I consider him an angel now, he’s looking down on everybody,” said one friend.

“He had two kids. The kids aren’t going to be with their father,” said Kameron Britte.

Friends and family have started a memorial at the park in honor of Francois.

According to Britte, Marcelo loved to rap and play basketball. “I’ve known him since Boys Club,” he said. “He was a good kid…I wish he was here.”

The park is directly across the street from the Ellen R. Hathaway Elementary School.

Marcelo’s friends say they hope to put together a charity basketball tournament to raise money for his funeral expenses.
