Providence teacher charged with assaulting student

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A high school math teacher in Providence has been arrested and charged with simple assault against a student, the school department confirmed Tuesday.

The department said it immediately placed the teacher on administrative leave upon hearing of the incident, pending the outcome of the criminal and internal investigations.

The school department did not provide the teacher’s name, but our news partners at The Providence Journal identified him as 49-year-old Stephen Pope of Warwick.

According to the paper, he’s accused of touching the thigh of a 15-year-old student while teaching at E-Cubed Academy.

Eyewitness News has reached out to Providence police and the city’s superintendent of schools for more information.
