PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Grace Episcopal Church in downtown Providence held a vigil Sunday afternoon in memory of the “Mother Emanuel 9.”
Nine members of the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina were gunned-down a week and a half ago on June 17th, during a Wednesday evening bible study, by 21-year-old Dylann Roof who was apprehended and is in custody.
Eyewitness News was present for the interfaith vigil held in Providence, which mourners say was an opportunity for closure.
“The whole nation is contemplating and thinking about this event,” says one church organizer.
“Everybody talked about peace and love and forgiving, and anybody who leaves this church today should have that in their hearts,” says a church member and mourner.
Each candle lit during the service represents one of the victim’s of the Charleston Massacre.
Sunday’s service had been organized by the Coalition for a Violence Free Rhode Island and the NAACP’s Providence branch.
