Car crashes into home, prompts evacuation

SOMERSET, Mass. (WPRI) — People were forced from their homes in Somerset late Tuesday afternoon after a car crashed into a house on Poplar Street.

Video sent into the Eyewitness News room showed the SUV was resting against the house and it appeared the vehicle struck a gas meter. That prompted a brief evacuation of the area and the residents have all been allowed to return to their homes.

Fire officials on scene said the driver – a man in his 20s – was taken to Rhode Island Hospital. The extent of his injuries were unknown as of 5:30 p.m.

Crews remain on scene, checking the home for structural damage.
