BARRINGTON, R.I. (WPRI) – A private organization is continuing search efforts for a missing boater after the Coast Guard, local police and firefighters suspended their efforts.
Stas Antons, a financial firm computer software director, was reported missing Thursday evening, and his empty boat was located about 500 yards from shore later that night.
“We don’t know if Stas went for a swim,” says sister-in-law Lori Teaken. ” We don’t know if he fell off his boat. We don’t know what happened.”
The Coast Guard, Department of Environmental Management, and local police and firefighters searched through Friday evening in good conditions but reported no results. They suspended their efforts at sundown.
But a local nonprofit is continuing the search on the water Saturday, with Antons’ family’s blessing. New England Search and Rescue is marshalling volunteers and private assets to scour the area again in the hopes of finding Antons.
“We always hold out hope that we can find the person alive,” says Christopher Monteiro, who’s spearheading the volunteer efforts. “There have been situations when we have before.”
Along with the NESR team and family coming in from out of state, Teaken says “we’re going to be here as late as we can today, and probably everyday, until we find him.”
To finance the continued search efforts, the group has started an online fundraiser seeking to raise $2,000.
