LINCOLN, R.I. (WPRI) – An unattended rice cooker left in the parking lot sparked a security scare at Twin River Casino Saturday morning.
According to the State Police, a man reportedly told casino security that he found the cooker next to a car in the parking lot at about 9:40 a.m.
Twin River security, the Lincoln Police Department, the State Police, Lime Rock Fire Department, and the State Fire Marshall’s office all responded to the scene.
Police reviewed video from the parking lot and identified the person who had left it, who was inside. She told investigators that she was meeting a friend at the casino, but the friend had arrived before she did and gone inside. They spoke on the phone and decided to leave the pressure cooker, which the friend had wanted to borrow, next to the friend’s car, to be picked up when they left the casino.
Both people apologized for the confusion. Their story checked out, according to State Police, and the bomb squad verified there was nothing dangerous about the device.
State Police said the casino was never evacuated because the car was far enough away from the building that evacuations weren’t necessary, but the parking lot was closed for a time while first responders worked.
Police had left the area by 11 a.m.
