BOSTON (WPRI) – The MBTA has stopped using its so-called “honor box” payment system.
The boxes were removed from all MBTA parking lots Monday.
The MBTA called the process of folding individual dollar bills and stuffing them into tiny slots “antiquated.”
It is switching to a PayByPhone method that allows customers to pay parking fess from any phone or internet connected device.
Seventy-five percent of MBTA customers already use the PayByPhone method.
A monthly permit system, with a built-in discount, is also being offered.
