WARREN, R.I. (AP) — Officials in Warren are considering a proposal to open a club for medical marijuana users.

Former Newport firefighter Patrick Rimoshytus wants to put the club in the former Nathaniel Porter Inn. His lawyer, Robert Healey Jr., tells the Providence Journal the proposed facility would link patients more directly with growers in a safe and private environment.

Those with a prescription would be able to purchase marijuana at Green Cross of Rhode Island club, and attend classes in cultivation and cooking techniques.

The Warren Planning Board has already unanimously approved an amendment to allow such membership clubs in non-residential areas. The Town Council has a public hearing scheduled for Tuesday night on that proposed ordinance.
