WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — Eyewitness News has learned that the victim in a fatal crash Friday night was once an aide to former Governor Lincoln Chafee.
Police on Monday identified the victim as 64-year-old Charles Hawkins, of Warwick.
Hawkins was struck by a car while walking his bicycle across Route 2 in Warwick Friday at about 6 p.m., and was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital.
Warwick police investigators said that the vehicle stopped after the collision and that it did not appear that alcohol was a factor.
According to a spokesperson for Chafee, Hawkins worked with both former Governor Chafee and his father, the late Senator John Chafee, on issues regarding transportation and energy.
Chafee, who reached while out of state campaigning for president, was “shocked” to hear of Hawkins’ death.
“My Dad and I enjoyed working with Charlie very much. He was an important part of Dad’s reelection team in 1988 and I know Dad valued his savvy advice in that tough campaign,” Chafee said in a statement. “It’s a very sad loss but we know he died doing something he loved, riding his bike for some time at a Rhode Island beach. Charlie was unique and special.”
Friends described Hawkins as an avid cyclist. His brother, Fr. Robert Hawkins, is the pastor of St. Luke’s Parish in Barrington.
It remains unknown whether charges will be filed against the driver who stayed on scene.
