Ohio Gov. Kasich formally announces presidential bid

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP/WDTN) – Ohio Gov. John Kasich is the latest entry into the 2016 Republican presidential race.

The outspoken swing-state governor declared his candidacy Tuesday at Ohio State University. “I have decided to run for President of the United States.”

After months of speculation, Kasich told the crowd he sees a decline in our nation and wants to change that.

“There are a lot of people in America today who are not sure that the American dream is possible, that the American dream is alive and I can understand their concerns.”

Kasich’s plan to bring back that dream is his top priority, balancing the budget and heading toward what he calls fiscal responsibility.

He plans to put the military and national security at the top of his to do list in the White House, plus he plans to bring jobs for every American.

He told thousands that Wilmington, Ohio is the blueprint for a recovery in the nation.

Two terms as Ohio’s governor, 18 years in Congress and nearly a decade in the private sector is what he notes as his experience.

Kasich says this is not a political campaign, but his service to America.

“The sun is going to rise to the zenith in America again. I promise you it will happen.”

Kasich is the 16th notable Republican to join the bustling contest for the nomination. He served previously in the House, where he became an architect of a balanced budget deal in 1997. He is 63 years old.

Kasich embraces conservative ideals but bucks his party on occasion and disdains the Republican sport of bashing Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton.

“The voters are tired of focus group tested lines. They’re tired of hearing canned statements. What the voters want is someone who is direct, who is genuine and I think that’s what Governor Kasich brings to the race,” said State Representative Niraj Antani, (R) Miami Township.

He left Columbus Tuesday for New Hampshire, home of the first presidential primary, to conduct a town hall meeting in Nashua
