Man sentenced for trafficking heroin into Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Boston man has been sentenced to more than 7 years in prison for trafficking heroin into Providence.

The U.S. Attorney’s office says 49-year-old Efrain Arroyo Melendez was sentenced last week to 87 months by U.S. District Court Judge Mary Lisi.

Prosecutors say investigators found approximately 2.3 kilograms of heroin inside a piece of luggage being carried by 39-year-old Amalia Martin at the Providence Amtrak station in January 2014.

They say the Providence woman was supposed to have delivered it to Melendez. He was arrested after picking it up from an undercover agent for the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Martin has pleaded guilty to conspiracy and possession. She is scheduled to be sentenced in September.
