Mass. marine killed in naval shooting to be laid to rest

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WPRI) — A marine from Springfield, Mass. that was killed at the Chattanooga naval reserve base will be laid to rest Monday in a private funeral.

Gunnery Sgt. Thomas Sullivan was one of four marines and a sailor that was killed in the shootings at a Tennessee recruitment center on July 16.

Thousands came out Sunday to pay their final respects to the fallen hero, including Governor Charlie Baker.

Sullivan had served time overseas and in the weeks prior to the Tennessee shooting, he was doing his normal early morning jog around Springfield.

“For Tommy to be over there for all of those times and then for him to come home and someone to shoot him.. it’s just unbearable, it’s unbearable and unspeakable,” said Sullivan’s friend, Maureen McFarlin.

The private funeral will only be attended by family, close friends, and local leaders.
