Police seeking man suspected of assaulting elderly woman

JOHNSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Police in Johnston are asking for the public’s help in locating a man who allegedly assaulted an elderly woman.

According to police, the woman was assaulted on Wednesday at approximately 9:20 p.m.

Police said she was knocked to the ground and dragged through the Stop & Shop parking lot on Commerce Way in Johnston by an unknown man who was trying to steal her purse.

The woman was injured during the exchange, police said.

“I think it’s awful. I mean you should be able to come shopping without being afraid,” said shopper Maureen McMahon
