CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) – A minimum-security inmate at the ACI has been charged with escape after he didn’t return from a work release assignment.
ACI officials alerted the State Police Saturday night that 53-year-old Michael Russo never returned from his assignment at North East Auto Body and Sales on Humbert Street in North Providence.
Troopers began checking several locations and interviewing people who knew Russo, but at about midnight he contacted the ACI and said he wanted to surrender. He went back to North East Auto Body and Sales and surrendered to Troopers and ACI staff.
Russo was charged with escape from a correctional institution, which carries a penalty of three years in prison or a fine.
Russo is serving a five-year sentence for felony assault, and lived in Johnston before his conviction.
