PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – The fourth annual Jeffrey Osborne Celebrity Classic raised more than $250,000 for local non-profits.
The three-day event kicked-off August 9 with the newly-added All-Star Celebrity Comedy Explosion featuring actors/comedians George Lopez, Cedric the Entertainer, Chris Tucker and Sinbad at the Providence Performing Arts Center.
The next day, Earvin “Magic” Johnson lent his softball talents to the cause, pitching for the West team, as well as co-hosting the event for the fourth time. Magic also celebrated his birthday at McCoy Stadium with a cake presentation on the field.
On August 11, the Celebrity Classic golf event faced inclement weather, but that didn’t stop the celebrities from enjoying the Carnegie Abbey Club and a few brave stars including: George Lopez, Cedric the Entertainer, Moses Malone, Ahmad Rashad, and Ty Law, from hitting the links.
Jeffrey Osborne is a Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter and a Rhode Island native. The three-day event that he’s spearheaded benefits charities that support initiatives to bring music and arts back to public school systems and those that provide safe, enriching environments and services for families and children in need.
To date the events have provided more than $600,000 to Rhode Island non-profits that represent the organization’s mission.
This year’s recipients include: The Amos House, The Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence, The Music School of the Rhode Island Philharmonic, The MET School, St. Mary’s Home for Children, and Button hole, among others.
