PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Rhode Islanders may not be getting new sailboat license plates after all.
Governor Gina Raimondo’s office says the new design that was supposed to start rolling out in September is on hold right now.
Last fall while still under the Chafee administration, the DMV unveiled the new design: a solid “Newport blue” plate with a gold silhouette of the 1903 America’s Cup winner, Reliance, with the slogan “Beautiful Rhode Island.”
When asked about the color of the plate, Anthony Silva of the DMV explained the meaning behind to chosen color.
“George Washington. When General Washington made his secret visit to Rhode Island during the Revolutionary War he saw the historic colonial blue color that every Rhode Islander will be posting on their car,” he said.
But according to Raimondo’s office, that may not be the case. While the sailboat is not off the table, Raimondo’s office said she wants to coordinate the new design with her $5 million tourism campaign.
A spokesperson for the governor said the design is expected to be finalized in the new year and the plates will start being issued in July.
