Fall River home struck by lightning

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — Some rumbles of thunder certainly rocked our area overnight, especially in Southeastern Massachusetts.

A resident who lives on Somerset Street said he awoke unexpectedly to what sounded like an explosion.

Instead, he realized lightning had struck his home, damaging his chimney.

“I came running outside and ran over to my neighbors driveway. I look up at the chimney and the chimney looked like a big chunk had been taken out of it,” said Joseph Costa.

An inspector will come by and assess the damage, checking for any further cosmetic or structural damage.

They also found their basement filled with smoke.

“If you go in the cellar in the house, it smells like the after effect of fireworks…it’s pretty crazy,” said Costa.
