MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — The friend of a Middletown woman who was killed in her apartment Tuesday morning, is speaking out a day after her untimely death.

The best friend of the victim, Rachael Kilroy, 34, was said to be going through serious relationship problems, reportedly beaten on for the year and a half Kilroy was together with 33-year-old Melissa Castle.

“If she smiles, she could make your bad day better,” said the victim’s friend, Miriam Unger. “She was that kind of person. I just wish she never met that girl.”

Police said they arrived to the apartment complex on Jean Street around 7 a.m., where they discovered Kilroy’s body.

An argument sparked the violent encounter in which the victim was strangled to death, according to police.

In court, it was revealed that Castle told police “I choked her. She’s dead.”

The Executive Director of the RI Coalition Against Domestic Violence released a statement regarding the strangulation.

When we view domestic violence solely as a criminal justice issue or a private relationship matter – rather than as a preventable public health crisis we know it to be – we fail to understand or adequately address the vast toll that domestic violence takes on all of us,” said Deborah Debare.

Castle was arraigned Tuesday on one count of domestic murder, then taken to Superior Court to be arraigned as a violator. She was ordered held without bail.

A friend of the victim said Kilroy leaves behind a young daughter, who is now being cared for by her family.

The Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the exact cause of death.
