Ortiz leaving as Elorza communications director

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – David Ortiz, a fixture in Providence City Hall since 2011, is leaving his job as communications director for Mayor Jorge Elorza.

Ortiz, who started as former Mayor Angel Taveras’s press secretary before moving up the ranks to become the communications director in both the Taveras and Elorza administrations, will hold the same position in General Treasurer Seth Magaziner’s office.

Ortiz starts his new job Sept. 8.

Evan England, Elorza’s press secretary, will be promoted to communications director. He ran Magaziner’s campaign for treasurer last year.

“Evan is very talented and has played an important role in my administration. I look forward to working with him as my Communications Director,” Elorza said in a statement. “I am deeply grateful for David Ortiz’s service and wish him well on all future endeavors.”

Ortiz is widely respected in government circles.

He was one of the few high-ranking aides to Taveras who remained in the city for four years, although he left for a brief time to oversee communications for Elorza’s campaign after the Democrat won a contentious primary last September. He returned to Taveras’s office for the final months of that administration before joining Elorza’s staff in January.
