Police: Woman hurt trying to fend off robbers

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — Police are searching for three female suspects after a woman was robbed of her purse at knifepoint in New Bedford.

City police spoke with the victim at St. Luke’s Hospital just before 2 a.m. Sunday as she got treated for a cut on her hand.

According to police, the 27-year-old said she left a house party on North Front Street and was walking home near Cedar Grove Street when she was confronted by the suspects, who tried to take her purse.

One of the suspects pulled out a knife during the struggle, and the victim told police she instinctively grabbed it, which caused the cut on her hand. The suspects were then able to take her purse and flee on foot.

Police said the victim walked home and got a ride to the hospital from a friend.

All three suspects are described as white females in their early 30s. Police said the one that was armed had a thin build and was wearing a black shirt and jeans, the second suspect stood about 5-foot-6 and had dark hair, and the third suspect is described as “chunky,” with short, curly hair.
