Second man charged with murder in death of New Bedford man

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — A second man has been charged with murder in connection to the August 2 death of Jeffrey Sylvia Jr., District Attorney Thomas Quinn announced Monday.

According to Quinn’s office, Michael Sousa, 22, was charged Monday with murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, armed robbery and defacing a serial number of a firearm.

Sousa was originally arrested for obstructing justice hours after the homicide, officials said, and has been incarcerated since the day of Sylvia’s death.

Police previously arrested 17-year-old Darian Cardoza on August 13. He is charged with murder, armed robbery and illegal possession of a firearm, according to the DA’s office.

According to police, the New Bedford Shot Spotter detection system notified officers that shots were fired near the intersection of Acushnet Avenue and Blackmer Street around 1:30 a.m. on August 2.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found Sylvia lying in the street, according to police. He was declared dead at the scene.

Sousa is scheduled to be arraigned on the new charges Tuesday morning.
