PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A homeless man charged with a brutal attack on a woman sitting on a front stoop is being held at the ACI on $50,000 bail with surety on the order of a judge.

Prince Johnson, 23, faced a judge at District Court in Providence Monday morning. He is charged with felony assault and has been ordered to have no contact with the victim.

Police said Johnson stabbed an 18-year-old woman about 9:30 p.m. on Friday while she was sitting on a stoop on Pine Street. A neighbor who asked to remain anonymous told Eyewitness News he heard the screaming first — then looked out his window and saw “this kid who frequents the neighborhood a lot chasing her,” he said.

According to a police report, the suspect stabbed her for “no apparent reason.”

The woman is now recovering from surgery.

Johnson is due back in court Oct. 19 for a pre-arraignment conference.
