Atlantic Beach Club shutting its doors, not just for the season

As summer comes to an end, a popular Aquidneck Island restaurant and bar is also closing its doors, but not just for the season.

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – As summer comes to an end, a popular Aquidneck Island restaurant and bar is also closing its doors, but not just for the season.

The Atlantic Beach Club and Pavilion will soon open solely as a private wedding venue.

Locals who frequent the popular spot are marking its close on a high note.

“It actually started in 1993,” says Elaine Holder, the restaurant’s general manager. “So here we are in 2015 saying goodbye and ending that era.”

A.B.C. started as an old seaside shack called “Johnny’s Atlantic Beach,” before the owners purchased the adjoining property in 1993 and combined the restaurants, including an outdoor bar with live entertainment.

The venue was purchased by new owners, Longwood Nights, in January.

This Labor Day weekend will be the venue’s last as it currently stands.

“It’s the end of an era. It’s a little bittersweet,” says Holder.

Eyewitness News spoke with customers at A.B.C. Friday night who shared the same sentiment as Holder.

A new venue is being built right up the street from the existing building, and will be called “The Atlantic Resort.”

The hotel and restaurant will begin hosting weddings next September.
