AAA collecting, recycling unsafe car seats

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — In order to keep children safe by removing unsafe car seats from circulation, AAA Northeast is holding a drive to collect them and recycle them.

Starting on Tuesday, parents can drop off recalled, expired or damaged car seats to any AAA location. A $5 reward will be given for each car seat, or you can choose to donate the money to the Safe Kids Coalition, which helps purchase new car seats for families in need.

According to AAA, car crashes are the leading cause of serious injury and death for children, but a properly used car seat or booster seat can reduce risk by up to 82 percent.

Since the car seats will be recycled, AAA asks that you remove the cover and padding before turning it in.

The event runs through Saturday, September 19.

To find out if your car seat qualifies, visit AAA Southern New England’s website.
