Fans brave wet weather to support Patriots in home opener

FOXBORO, Mass. (WPRI) — Tom Brady isn’t the only person fired up for Thursday’s home opener against Pittsburgh.

Eyewitness News caught up with both Patriots and Steelers fans at Gillette Stadium Thursday – and everyone said they are excited to see the rivalry unfold.

Kevin Devanna said he hopes the Pats destroy the Steelers.

“My friend over here is a Pittsburgh Steelers fan – probably the only other one that’s here with us – so we just can’t wait to rub it in on the way home,” he said.

Devanna said he and his friend have remained close all this time because the Patriots “beat Pittsburgh every single time,” – and if it was the other way around, he joked that they wouldn’t be friends at all.

Another Steelers fan was found among a group of Patriot-lovers from Rhode Island.

“Brady is going down,” Troy Larkin said when asked about his prediction for the game.

His friend Rob Snyder disagreed though, saying “Brady – four touchdowns.”

Brady will make his first game appearance before the home crowd since winning the AFC Championship game in January. After months of dealing with the Deflategate controversy, Brady will take the field again with his team.

Recently, a judge negated his four-game suspension – which was handed down by the league after a report claimed he was “at least generally aware” of a conspiracy to deflate footballs.

“It’s been a tough, challenging seven months, but I think it’ll be pretty exciting to run out there on Thursday with my teammates,” Brady said during a recent interview.

Patriots super fan

Rocco Santurri Jr. told Eyewitness News on Wednesday that he has attended the last 43 consecutive Patriot home openers. Thursday’s game will be number 44 for Santurri.

His daughter, who is also celebrating her 35th straight home opener, said she is excited to see the championship banner go up at Gillette.

She took the time Thursday to describe the necessary provisions needed to properly celebrate a Patriots home game.
