Officials investigating cause of Cranston apartment fire

CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Crews were called to an apartment complex in Cranston Thursday morning to tackle a fire.

According to officials, the fire started in a third floor apartment at the Evergreen Apartments on Broad Street. The fire broke out just before 9 a.m.

Officials said the flames were contained to one unit, which was heavily damaged. Several other units also sustained damage, according to fire officials.

All of the building’s residents were able to get out safely, according to fire officials.

“All occupants were exited safely. The fire itself was localized to one unit and there was smoke damage and water damage throughout the whole wing. We’ve got twelve apartments that we’re inspecting now to verify the varying degree of damage,” said Deputy Chief Stephen Macintosh of the Cranston Fire Department.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
